First… Be a follower

“Network Marketing is a leadership business.” Of course.

And then again… perhaps not. Or at least, not as much as some-to-many would have us believe.

FollowTheLeaderAmong the tens-of-millions of Networkers throughout the world, how many leaders do you suppose there are— even if your definition of a leader was someone with one or more followers?

Would you agree that every Network Marketing organization needs to have more— many, many more— followers than leaders to grow and succeed?

As you read each of the twenty-one stories of The Greatest Networkers… you’ll be reading about leaders one-and-all.

They were all followers first.

I remember a story that was told as a vesper (evening prayer) at a YMCA camp I went to as a boy. Here it is:

One night, a father was in his study filling out his daughter’s application for Vassar College— at the time, a women’s only school, and to this day “a highly selective, residential, liberal arts college located in the heart of the Hudson Valley in New York State.”

He paused at the final question: “Would she make a good leader?”

He was a man who valued integrity highly. He paused, thoughtfully… then wrote, “No. But she will make a great follower.”

As he mailed the letter his heart was heavy at the price his daughter might pay for his honesty. His love for her was also one of his highest values.

Weeks passed. Finally the reply arrived from the Dean of Admissions at Vassar. Apprehensively, the father opened the letter. It read…

“We are proud to inform you that your daughter has been accepted…”

A strong sigh of relief turned quickly to a broad smile as the man closed the acceptance letter and looked up to the sky saying, “Thank God.”

He opened the letter to reread it and this time noticed the hand written note on the bottom. The Dean had written…

Your honesty is refreshing. Thank you. It may be interesting for you to know that out of an incoming class of 495 leaders, there will be at least one follower.

“Network Marketing is a followership” business. Of course.
